Our Early Beginnings

In the summer of 1958, Austin Wald of Northwest Missions came to Star Valley and saw the need for a Baptist work here in the Valley. He called Eldred (Curly) Bagley to pastor the fledging ministry. Services were held in the Armory. Some of the first families were the Phil Grimes of Freedom, Guy Wallace, Jim Bassi, Earl Coziah, Arthur Mead and Ken McCoy of Afton, and Dick Titensor of Thayne.

In the Spring of 1961, a few members of the congregation wanted to have a permanent place of our own. Dr. Al Swenson of the American Baptist Convention met with us and offered help in getting started.  We borrowed money to buy the present property and finish up the building.

In June of 1961, again with Dr. Swenson’s help, we got a Pastor - our first after joining the American Baptist Convention - James Eckles with his wife and daughter. We held services in the Veterans' Building while our church was being finished. It was a really good feeling when we held our first service in our own building.

In April of 1965, Pastor Eckles resigned to become a chaplain in the U.S. Navy in San Diego, California. We were without a pastor from April until December 1965. During the time that we were without a pastor, Roy Nine filled in for us.

Just before Christmas, Hollis Hockett arrived here with his wife, daughter (Galene), and son (Galen). The church was growing, but many of the members were subject to transfer, so we were losing members as well. Mr. Hockett pastored the church until 1975 when he had to resign because of health reasons.

At this time the congregation left the American Baptist Convention and became an Independent Baptist Church.

Pastor Dechant along with his wife Phillys and their three children came later in 1975.  He was here for two years and then resigned to pastor another church.

In 1977, Pastor Amo Stephens, his wife Nancy, and four daughters - Debbie, Lonnie, Bonnie, and Stephanie - came to lead our church. He started the Awana Program which is well attended and doing well in 1985.

Our Statement of Faith

  • WE BELIEVE the Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testament, are God's verbally and plenarily inspired Word. The Scriptures are inerrant, infallible, and God-breathed and are, therefore, the final authority for faith and life. The King James Version of the Bible is the official translation used by the church. (II Tim. 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21)
  • WE BELIEVE in the one triune God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit– each co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, and having the same attributes and perfections (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; John 14:10,26; II Cor. 13:14). We believe God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing by His spoken Word. (Heb. 11:3)
  • WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, was true God and true man, lived a sinless life; and we believe in His atoning death through His shed blood, His burial, His bodily resurrection and His ascension into Heaven. (John 1:14, Isa. 7:14, I Cor. 15:1-4)
  • WE BELIEVE that the Holy Spirit is divine and is the third person of the Trinity, the agent of conviction, indwells and gives life to believers, teaches them the Scriptures, and empowers and equips the believer to godly living.
  • WE BELIEVE that God created the heavens, the earth, and all of life in six literal days (Gen. 1). We believe God created Adam and Eve in His own image, distinct from other living creatures; and Adam and Eve chose to sin against God. Therefore, all persons inherit a depraved nature and are sinners in need of salvation (Rom. 3:10,23).
  • WE BELIEVE God created Adam and Eve male and female (Gen. 2:18-24); that male and female are the only two sexes, or genders of all mankind; that marriage was instituted by God and is the union of one man and one woman who are legally married to each other; and that the Scriptures forbid any other sexual union, whether between a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, or among more than two persons.
  • WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, as our substitute; that He atoned for our sins by shedding of His blood on the cross of Calvary (John 14:6, I Peter 1:18-19); and that those who by faith believe in His saving grace are born-again. We believe salvation is a free gift of God by grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ (John 10:27-28, Eph. 2:8-10).
  • WE BELIEVE in the existence of Satan, who rebelled against God and was cast out of Heaven, in sin, and in evil powers; and that they were defeated by God through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Isa. 14:13-15).
  • WE BELIEVE that a believer in Jesus Christ is to live a sanctified and Holy life in Christ Jesus.
  • WE BELIEVE in the body of Christ the Church; and that it is composed of true believers in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:8-5:32). We believe that Jesus Christ is the head of the Church and has commanded believers to proclaim the Gospel of salvation to the whole world (I Tim.3:15).
  • WE BELIEVE in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the saved to everlasting life in heaven with Jesus, and the lost to everlasting punishment in the lake of fire (John 5:28-29; I cor. 15:12-20,35-58; Rev. 20:10,15).
  • WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ will return to this earth (I Thess. 4:13-17) visibly, and unexpectedly, in power and great glory. He will judge the world and set up His millennial reign on Earth. (Rev. 20:1-3, 21:1-5)

God Wants You to Know:

  1. THAT ALL MEN (persons) NEED TO BE SAVED!"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" - Romans 3:23
  2. THAT SIN DEMANDS JUDGMENT!"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." - Romans 6:23
  3. THAT WE CANNOT SAVE OURSELVES OR GET TO HEAVEN BY OUR GOOD WORKS!"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9
  4. THAT CHRIST PAID THE PENALTY FOR OUR SIN ON THE CROSS!"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8
  5. THAT IF WE CALL UPON CHRIST, HE WILL SAVE US!"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." - Romans 10:13
